Ceiling Grid

Used to place area ceilings, linear ceilings, and patterned ceilings in a DGN model. Spaces and closed shapes are used to define the shape of the ceiling.

Accessed from:

  • Ribbon: Building Design > Architectural > Place Architectural Elements > Ceiling > Ceiling Grid

SettingDescription
Ceiling Type Sets the type of ceiling that is placed.
  • Grid — Places a checkered ceiling grid suitable for ceiling tile construction.
  • Linear — Places a linear ceiling grid suitable for ceilings constructed of linear wood and metal structure.
  • Patterned — Places a patterned ceiling suitable for plaster and gypsum construction.
Placement preview box Displays the active ceiling grid and pointer orientation (red dot) with regard to the placement method chosen from the Placement option (By:)menu.
Placement option menu Available for Grid and Linear ceiling placement types only. Sets the ceiling grid placement method.
  • for Grid Ceiling:
    • Center Tile — Places the center of a ceiling grid (and center of a ceiling tile) in the center of the selected space area (at the geometric centroid) and floods the remaining space with ceiling grids.
    • Center Corner — Places the corner points of four adjoining ceiling grid sections in the center of the selected space area (at the geometric centroid) and floods the remaining space with ceiling grids.
    • By Point — A corner of the ceiling grid (ceiling tile) is anchored and placed by a data point anywhere in the selected space area. The ceiling grid is dynamically attached to the pointer during placement.
  • for Linear Ceiling:
    • Center Panel — Places the center of a linear grid structure element in the center of the selected space area (geometric centroid) and floods the remaining space with linear grids.
    • Center Spacing — Places the center of a linear grid area (spacing between two grid structure elements) in the center of the selected space area (geometric centroid) and floods the remaining space with linear grids.
    • By Point — The edge of a linear grid structure is anchored and placed by a data point anywhere in the selected space area. The strip edge is dynamically attached to the pointer during placement.
Row Spacing Enabled when Ceiling Type is set to Grid. Sets spacing distance between ceiling grid rows.
Column Spacing Enabled when Ceiling Type is set to Grid. Sets spacing distance between ceiling grid columns.
Toggle Annotation scale When on, the active model annotation scale applies during placement; and when off, the Annotation scale is disregarded.
Material Width Enabled when Ceiling Type is set to Linear. Sets ceiling grid linear member material width.
Spacing Enabled when Ceiling Type is set to Linear. Sets spacing distance between ceiling grid linear member centers.
Pattern Cell Enabled when Ceiling Type is set to Patterned. Selects the active ceiling cell used to pattern the ceiling area. Ceiling pattern cells are stored in BB_CEILINGS_PATTERNLIBRARY.
  • Entire Ceiling — Floods the entire space area with ceiling pattern.
  • Perimeter — Floods only the space perimeter with ceiling pattern.
Elevation Sets the ceiling grid elevation mode.
  • Space Height — Places the ceiling grid at space height, or the elevation of a non-space perimeter is used.
  • Active Depth — Places the ceiling grid at active depth elevation.
  • User Defined — Places the ceiling grid at a user defined elevation.
    • User Defined field – Enabled when Elevation mode is set to User Defined. Sets the User Defined elevation.
  • Active Floor/Reference Plane — Places the ceiling grid on the active Floor Reference Plane/ACS, as defined in the Floor Manager.
Family Sets the active family.
Part Sets the active part. The dataset part is used only to set the symbology (level, color, style, and weight) of the ceiling.
Match/Modify Settings are used to match, replace and modify ceilings.
  • Match — Sets active settings to match the selected existing ceiling. The selected ceiling displays in the Placement preview box. If settings are changed after Match is pressed but before the next ceiling is placed, the new ceiling will not match the selected ceiling.
  • Replace — This setting converts the Place Ceiling Grid tool to a single-shot Replace Ceiling Grid command. The properties of existing ceilings are modified to the active settings.

The Replace Ceiling Grid command is automatically active when a selection set exists (when the Place Ceiling Grid tool icon is selected). In this instance, a Reset converts the tool back to Place Ceiling Grid.

Note: Use the Replace Ceiling command to change the elevation of ceilings. Ceilings cannot be copied, moved, or scaled.
Key-in: BB CEILINGS < PLACE REFLECTED | MATCH | REPLACE > REFLECTED
Note: BB CEILINGS MATCH is a function of the Match button. BB CEILINGS REPLACE is a function of the Replace button.
